Undergraduate Outcomes:
Upon completion of the BSc in Construction Studies programme, the graduate is competent to:
1. Perform basic construction trade skills and set out buildings.
2. Use computer packages for computer-aided draughting presentation, scheduling and information processing.
3. Manage and prepare tender and contractual documents relating to building work.
4. Estimate cost and undertake financial management of construction projects.
5. Manage the construction of buildings and related infrastructure and manage the human resources with a construction firm.
6. Understand and evaluate economic issues concerning the construction sector and the construction firm at both a micro and macro level.
7. Understand the time value of money and apply discounted cash flow techniques for evaluating alternative property investments.
8. Communicate with construction professionals concerning spatial concepts, financial issues and construction assembly problems.
In acquiring the BSc Construction Studies degree, there is a course to complete named PRACTICAL TRAINING. We are required to get approved and supervised experience employed in any of the built environment disciplines (construction; engineering; housing; property development and management; quantity surveying; relevant local authority, provincial and national government departments).
After completing our practical training we should be able to demonstrate new skills acquired in the workplace and use the skills we learn to supplement theoretical learning with practical exposure to work situations in the built environment.
We are required to work 8 hours a day for 4 weeks each year (approximately 20 days/160 hours).We are then required to submit a written report in accordance with the guidelines set out by the Department which is endorsed by our employer/s, on the nature and duration of the experience obtained in the workplace.
